The next morning, Shar stood in the same spot Becky had the day before and took a deep breath. Knowing the current administrator was prone to drink, as Becky’s last text of the night stated, Shar’s bluff would be easier to pull off.
She rang the bell three times and stepped back, squaring her shoulders. The woman she presumed to be Mrs. Stuart opened the door, her gaze raking over Shar.
“What do you want?”
“Mrs. Stuart?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m Ann Link, the new director. You’re dismissed, effective immediately. Please pack your personal belongings.” Shar met the woman’s glare.
“Who said?”
“Mrs. Smith.” Shar slipped her mask into place and glanced at her watch. “You have thirty minutes to vacate the property.”
“It’ll take that long for a taxi.”
“Then I suggest you call one before you pack.” Shar squeezed past her, catching a glimpse of several wide-eyed mothers-to-be watching from the dining room.
Mrs. Stuart muttered some very unflattering words about Mrs. Smith and lumbered past the stairs to a room at the end of the foyer. Banging quickly ensued, along with a few choice words, before the woman entered again, battered suitcase in hand. “Good luck, Barbie Doll. It’s an ungrateful job.” She padded outside, slamming the door behind her.
Shar motioned to Becky. “What’s your name?”
“Lucy.”
“How many girls are here?”
“Fifteen, counting me. I can show you to your office.”
“In a minute.” Clasping her hands in front of her, Shar surveyed the silent group. “Give me a day to acquaint myself, evaluate the way things were run, then we’ll have a meeting to discuss the changes. Any questions?” She smiled.
Expressions of shock flitted across their faces, tugging at Shar’s heart. She motioned her head to Becky and let herself be shown to her room.
“Close the door,” she said once they were inside. “This looks like a prison.” A full-sized bed with a plain blue blanket, a table and chair, one small dresser.
“You have your own bathroom to the left and your office is to the right. Mrs. Stuart enforced rules with an iron fist, literally.” Becky plopped onto the chair. “I wish I could get this belly off for five minutes.”
Shar laughed. “Do you shower in it?”
“No. That’s the only time I can take it off. I make use of every minute of my fifteen allowed.” She handed a sheet of paper to Shar. “The rules. It didn’t take me but ten minutes to learn Mrs. Stuart spent her life ripped. She’s a mean drunk, too. Hates the girls.”
“Then, it’s a good thing she’s no longer here. Were you able to find out the last time Smith visited?”
“It’s written on the desk calendar. Just a couple of days ago, to be exact. I tried to get into the filing cabinet after the woman passed out last night, but it’s locked up tight. Hopefully, she left you the key.”
Shar sat on the bed. “What about the infant deaths?”
Becky swallowed hard. “Just about every single one that is born here dies. The only ones who don’t are the ones born to little rich girls whose parents want them out of sight for a while and pay a pretty penny for it.
